VISIT TO PARIS
May 1-2, 5-8, 2007
May 1-2, 5-8, 2007
Early evening of May 1, my friends Sally and Pierre Rousset brought me to the Sacred Heart Church where one could view part of the city of Paris.
I arrived in Paris from Rotterdam, Holland by mid-day. After I deposited my luggage at the Rousset residence, Sally brought me to the May 1 march which ended at Nacional. Workers, students and other activists joined this march which mobilized quite a number of French people.
Returning to Paris after a visit to Auxonne, Taize and Dijon, I stayed at the flat of Christophe and Maya Jezewski (known to ASI friends as Thelma Noval of Cebu). They hosted me for the rest of my stay in Paris.
Maya and me at their flat.
Going out to see the open market, checking out the fruits and vegetables being sold.
A view of the street in front of the Grand Pantheon that shows the tip of the Eiffel Tower.
Me in front of the Pantheon where the remains of Victor Hugo, Madame Curie and other distinguished French are buried.
In front of the palace inside the Luxemburg Garden, very near the Pantheon.
At the park.
The Latin quarter section of Paris where most universities are like the Sorbonne.
Old Roman ruins along a main road in Paris.
Interesting posters on a roadside bookstore showing the French interest in politics, spirituality and art.
St. Michael's statue at a main crossroad in the city.
Another collection of posters showing the interplay of spirituality symbols in a Paris street.
A lone tourist boat crusing the Seine River.
More views of the Notre Dame Cathedral.
Bookstores and restaurants along the river bank.
A close up photo of the sculpture of St. Michael with the fountain.
A gathering of Filipina OFWs known as the Babaylan group in Paris gather at the flat of Lorna for a sharing of experiences. Before the sharing, naturally, there is merienda for all.
On May 6, there was the final election between Sakorsky and Royal as President of the French Republic. Maya and Christophe went to the nearest school to cast their ballots.
Photo of artworks made by students of a local school, one of whom is the son of Maya.
Posing at the Pompipou Cultural Center, a major landmark in Paris, especially for thos interested in modern art.
The building itself is a work of art. When it opened about a decade ago, it was both praised and critiqued. With the passing of time, there is hardly any more negative reaction to this type of architecture which predates many of the current postmodern buildings.
The Eiffel Tower as viewed from one of the bridges traversing the Seine River.
At the Museum of the Arts and Civilizations of Oceania, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
The side view of the Museum.
At the St. Bernadette Church in Paris where a Filipino Mass bring together more than a thousand Pinoys for a 4:30 PM Mass schedule.
Outside the church, the enterprising ones sell all kinds of food stuff to those who came to attend the Mass.
Inside the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal where the body of St. Catherine Laboure was placed in a reliquary. The young Sr. Catherine had an apparition of the Blessed Virgin in July of 1830.
At her death in 1876, St. Catherine was buried in a tomb under the chapel of the House of Reuill. In 1933, her body was placed in this reliquary inside the chapel.
The Statue of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.
A continous flow of pilgrims enter the chapel to seek favors.
Outside the chapel, stands a statue of St. Vincent de Paul.
