Photos in Bishop Kevin Dowling's compound in Rustenburg

The photos in this collection include: Bishop Kevin Dowling explaining to a group of
Irish youth what the Diocese is trying to do to assist the poor in the Rusternburg Diocese (especially those infected with HIV-AIDS).

At the back of the Bishop's compound is a cemetery. In this cemetery, one sees rows
and rows of children's graves. (Some of
these children died of complications due to HIV-AIDS). One sees toys, milk bottles and other children paraphernalia on top of the graveyards.

Inside the Bishop's compound is a hospice for those dying of illnesses complicated by HIV-AIDS. Trained laypeople work as health caregivers and as office staff. At the time of my visit there were about 30 patients who were at various stages of infection.

The hospice's design is very much influenced by an ecological perspective. It is made of mud mixed with straw. In order to keep the temperature cool inside the hospice, air is circulated through tunnels built above the
building. Wind comes in through the structure that looks like chimneys.
